In 1980-81, a special international tournament was organized in Uruguay with the support of FIFA to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the World Cup. All past world champions participated, except England who were replaced by the Netherlands (runners-up in 1974-1978). In the final, La Celeste beat Brazil 2-1 to become "Champions of world champions."
En 1980-81, se organizó en Uruguay un torneo internacional especial con el apoyo de la FIFA para celebrar el 50 aniversario de la Copa del Mundo. Participaron todos los campeones del mundo anteriores, excepto Inglaterra, que fue reemplazada por Holanda (subcampeona en 1974-1978). In 1985, Uruguay met France for the inaugural Artemio Franchi Cup, a trophy competed between the reigning Copa America and Euro champions. In this match, La Celeste lost 2-0 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

In 1997, Uruguay participated in the inaugural FIFA Confederations Cup and came in 1st in a group that included United Arab Emirates, Czech Republic and South Africa. La Celeste would later lose to Australia in the semi final due to a golden goal, finally finishing in 4th place.

In 2013, Uruguay (reigning Copa America champions) were drawn in a group with Spain, Nigeria and Tahiti. La Celeste would later narrowly lose to hosts Brazil in the semi final. The 3rd Place Match vs. Italy was also memorable, ending in a shootout loss for Uruguay.
