In 1924, FIFA and the French Football Federation organized the first open (non-amateur) football world championship at the Olympic games in Paris. After eliminating Yugoslavia, the United States, France and
the Netherlands, La Celeste captured football's first
world title against Switerzland in Colombes, where they also performed the first-ever lap of honour.
En 1924, la FIFA y la Federación Francesa de Fútbol organizaron el primer campeonato mundial de fútbol abierto (no amateur) en los Juegos Olímpicos de París. In 1928, FIFA and the Dutch Football Association organized the second open (non-amateur) football world championship at the Olympic games in Amsterdam. After eliminating the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, La Celeste captured their second world title against Argentina.

In 1930, FIFA organized its first world championship outside the sphere of the Olympic Games. Uruguay was chosen as the inaugural hosts. After eliminating Romania, Peru and Yugoslavia, La Celeste won its third consecutive world title against Argentina in Montevideo.

After boycotting 1934 and 1938, Uruguay returned to the World Cup after a 20-year absence. La Celeste advanced to the final-group, which included hosts Brazil, Sweden and Spain. In the final match, Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1 in front of over 200,000 fans to claim their 4th world title.

At the 1954 World Cup, reigning champions Uruguay advanced from a group that included Czechoslovakia, Scotland and Austria. In the quarter-finals, La Celeste beat England 4-2, before losing to Hungary in an all-time classic semifinal. This was Uruguay's first loss at a FIFA organized tournament, undefeated from 1924-1954.

At the 1962 World Cup, Uruguay were eliminated in a group that included Colombia, European champions Soviet Union and European finalists Yugoslavia. Going into the last match of the group, La Celeste needed a win to guarantee passage to the quarter final.

At the 1962 World Cup, Uruguay were drawn in a group featuring hosts England, France and Mexico. After advancing in 2nd place, La Celeste's campaign ended in a controversial quarter final vs. West Germany.

At the 1970 World Cup, Uruguay were drawn in a group featuring Italy, Isreal and Sweden. In the knockout stage, La Celeste beat the Soviet Union in dramatic fashion to advance to the top 4 for the fourth time. In the semi final, Uruguay were finally eliminated 3-1 by eventual winners Brazil.

In 1986, Uruguay returned to the World Cup after missing two consecutive editions for the first time. La Celeste advanced from a group that featured West Germany, Denmark and Scotland, notably seeing their worst defeat in tournament history at the hands of the Danes. Uruguay went as far as the Round of 16, losing to rivals (and eventual champions) Argentina.

In 1990, Uruguay were drawn in a group with Spain, Belgium and Korea Republic. La Celeste would dramatically advance to the Round of 16 in injury time of the last group match. From there, they were eliminated by hosts Italy in Rome.

In 2002, Uruguay made their return to the World Cup after missing the previous two editions. La Celeste were drawn in a group with defending champions France, Denmark and Senegal. On the final match day, Uruguay (needing a win) drew Senegal 3-3 after trailing 0-3 at half-time.

In the knockout stage, La Celeste beat South Korea and then Ghana in an all-time World Cup classic to make the top 4 for the fifth time. In the semi finals, Uruguay narrowly lost to the Netherlands and played Germany for the 3rd Place Match.

After beating both former world champions, La Celeste advanced to the Round of 16 without key player Luis Suarez, who had been suspended for the rest of the tournament. There, Uruguay lost to Colombia in Rio de Janeiro.

After advancing from the group in 1st place, La Celeste went on to eliminate European champions Portugal in a memorable Round of 16 match. Uruguay finally lost to France in the quarterfinals and finished the tournament ranked #5.
